Distinguished Achievement Award for Alumni of Materials Science and Engineering

Stephen L. Sass (Ph.D. 1966, Cohen), Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University. Professor Sass is being honored for his distinguished career and contributions to the field that include breakthrough studies of grain-boundary structures using the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source, efforts to bring knowledge of materials science and engineering to a broad audience through teaching and authorship of "The Substance of Civilization," and success at nucleating the careers of students who have gone onto successful and distinguished academic and research careers of their own.

Early Career Achievement Award for Alumni in Materials Science and Engineering

Alan Lund (Ph.D. 2002, Voorhees), Ph.D, CTO of Xtalic Corporation and Christopher Schuh (Ph.D. 2001, Dunand), Professor and Department Chair of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT and founder of Xtalic Corporation. Dr. Lund and Prof. Schuh are begin honored particularly for their successful advancement of nanocrystalline coatings from the academic research laboratory to the industrial sector by way of establishing Xtalic Corporation.
